The Presence of God“Be still and know that I am God.” Lord, your words lead us to the calmness and greatness of your presence.
FreedomI am free. When I look at these words in writing, they seem to create in me a feeling of awe. Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom. Thank you, God.
ConsciousnessAt this moment, Lord, I turn my thoughts to you. I will leave aside my chores and preoccupations. I will take rest and refreshment in your presence, Lord.
The WordThe Word of God comes down to us through the Scriptures. May the Holy Spirit enlighten my mind and my heart to respond to the Gospel teachings.
[Jesus spoke to the crowds,] “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another,
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
- What was on offer from the Lord had always been happiness deep as a river, children and descendants without number. But what the people chose to do was sulk. To Jesus, their objection was the company that he ate and drank with; to John, their objection had been that he neither ate nor drank but fasted.
- Lord, I recognize something of my own response to people here. I am not always open to listening and accepting those who are different. I can so easily judge, dismiss, and reject people. I need your help today.
Begin to talk with Jesus about the Scripture you have just read. What part of it strikes a chord in you? Perhaps the words of a friend—or some story you have heard recently—will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the Scripture passage may be trying to say to you?
ConclusionGlory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,World without end. Amen.
