Principal's Message- March

March 09, 2017

March - 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians;

March 1st, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and we are celebrating a mass at 9:15a.m at Our Lady of the Foothills Church on this day. This is the season before Easter which cumulates with Holy Thursday Mass. The evening of Holy Thursday begins The Easter Triduum, which lasts from Holy Thursday to the Evening Prayer of Easter Day. However, Lenten fasting and penance continue until the end of Holy Week, and all of Holy Week is included in the traditional 40 day Lenten fast. The purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, and simplicity. Lent can be viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things which hinder our personal relationships with Jesus Christ and our service to him.

Staff and students at SGCS are preparing for Easter in a variety of ways and we encourage you to discuss with your child how they might be willing to "sacrifice" or give up some things at home. Suggestions that have come from our students could be to limit Facebook time, internet access, gaming devices and texting. Junk food and chocolate have always been a favourite but you may also want to place a focus on positive actions rather than giving up something. Donating time at our local food bank, raising funds for a charity of your choice or doing their siblings chores are all good examples of positive actions.

We recently celebrated Friendship Day this past month, and we certainly want to thank our ex-students from GRCCS –Mr. Anderson's Gr. 6 class who led the day and made it an awesome event for us.

We are extremely pleased that our students have been able to participate in the cross-country ski days at the Nordic center so far. With the new snowshoes purchased, it adds a new dimension for our students!

This month is also a reporting period for all of our students and an opportunity for us all to reflect upon the successes that each of us has attained to this point in the school year.  It is a time to give thanks for the many blessings given to us.  We encourage all parents to book an interview time with their child's home room teachers.  Report cards will be sent home on March 17th, and Parent-Teacher interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, March 21st and Wednesday, March 22nd.

Spring break starts March 24th ( Friday is a PD Day for staff).We wish everyone a safe and relaxing time away from school, and we look forward to seeing you back at St. Gregory's on Monday, April 3rd.

Yours in Christ,

Mr. T Fafard
